Centrally located on the Leesburg Regional Medical Center North Campus, the LRMC Senior Behavioral Health Center provides a therapeutic and safe environment for individuals in need of acute psychiatric care. This is a voluntary unit, which means that patients have made a decision to seek treatment and are willing to accept and engage in treatment. Patients are often self-admitted, referred by local hospitals, emergency rooms, or outpatient providers.
Local psychiatrist Jessica Peterson, DO, is the Center’s medical director and, as a physician with specialized training in Osteopathic Medicine, utilizes a whole-body approach to assessing and treating patients. “We individualize patient care on a case-by-case basis,” she says. “The first thing we do is identify which treatment options would be most helpful. We seek to understand the patient and tailor the treatments for his or her needs.”
Though it is a voluntary inpatient facility, Dr. Peterson adds it is a fully functioning hospital floor with an onsite physician as well as a dedicated team of nursing professionals. “We treat people with serious depression, schizophrenia, bipolar, various personality disorders and most mental health concerns, as long as they are able to engage in their treatment,” she says. “In my role as medical director, I am also the psychiatrist on staff and treat all patients who are admitted to our Center.”
Dr. Peterson says the center uses a dual approach as its treatment model. The first is medication management; identifying the correct medications and the optimal dosage. The second is therapy; utilizing group therapy and psychotherapy to uncover the root causes of a patient’s diagnosis.
As a dedicated behavioral health practitioner, Dr. Peterson is passionate about connecting with patients in ways they did not think were possible.
“It is so important to create an environment where each patient feels comfortable enough to engage in their own recovery. I want to erase the stigma surrounding mental health. People need to know if they are struggling, there is absolutely no shame in seeking treatment,” Dr. Peterson says. “Ultimately, of course, it is all about the patient. If we can return someone to a place in their life where they can be happy and productive then we will have done our job.”
The LRMC Senior Behavioral Health Center was created to meet the mental health needs of our community. The unit includes 21 patient beds and offers individualized care for patients in a modern and comfortable environment.
