Many things can throw our lives off course. Here are three mindful methods to check your compass and stay calm during a storm:
- Drop down: Allow yourself to drop down into the emotion and see what’s there, observing with curiosity. It takes practice, but soon you can to tune in to your body.
- Self-soothe: Evidence shows that putting your hand over your heart—or wherever you most find it soothing—taps into the body’s mammalian caregiver response and releases oxytocin and opiates in your brain to counteract cortisol, the stress hormone.
- Practice loving kindness on yourself: What do you really need to hear right now? You are loved? Safe? Healthy? Strong? Create a loving kindness phrase and repeat it as a mantra. Do this anywhere.
