Elite Orthopedics and Sports Medicine: Helping patients be active again

Written by Healthy Living

A double board-certified physician in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, Dr. Deenesh T. Sahajpal of Elite Orthopedics treats Villages residents with knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, wrist, and hand pain; arthritic patients seeking joint replacements for arthritis; and young athletes experiencing sports injuries and fractures.

“We try to treat most things arthroscopically,” says Dr. Sahajpal. The arthroscopic procedure allows the surgeon to attach an arthroscope to a miniature TV camera to view the interior of the joint through a very small incision. The end result for patients is often less pain, less joint stiffness, and shorter recovery time.

He also offers non-operative treatment options with PRP, stem cell, and steroid injections.

“A lot of people want to stay active and play their favorite sports again,” says Dr. Sahajpal. “They are motivated. We give the patients an understanding of what is going to happen after surgery, what to expect, and we make sure they are well educated before we do the surgery. The education helps in how we proceed.”

Dr. Sahajpal recalls being inspired to go into orthopedics after he broke his leg in medical school. He is one of a few orthopedic surgeons in the country to have finished more than two years of subspecialized fellowship training. He completed a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery (joint replacement and arthroscopy) at New York University/Hospital for Joint Diseases, along with additional elbow surgery training from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

He also completed a sports medicine fellowship, which included training in hip arthroscopy and hip labral repair, from the internationally recognized Steadman Hawkins Clinics.

Dr. Sahajpal has served as an associate team physician with the New York Mets and Colorado Rockies professional baseball teams, and he was a physician for the ATP and WTA professional tennis tours at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California.

Regardless if he’s treating professional athletes, young athletes, or retirees in The Villages, Dr. Sahajpal delights in helping all ages get the procedures they need to be able to enjoy their favorite activities again.
